“BE WORLD-CLASS. STUDY IN THE PHILIPPINES”

Vietnamese parents and students had a chance to meet with Philippine education representatives in a recently-concluded Philippine mini-fair held at the Sheraton Saigon in Ho Chi Minh City.

The event, organized by the Philippines’ Department of Trade and Industry -Bureau of Export Trade Promotion (BETP), in coordination with the Philippine Trade and Investment Center (PTIC), the commercial arm of the Philippine Embassy – Ha Noi, allowed colleges and universities from the Philippines, a known producer of world-class graduates to talk about the study programs and courses available for the Vietnamese.

“Vietnamese who give primary importance to education and who wish to be more competitive in the global arena will stand to benefit in studying in the Philippines, because of the cost advantage, the proximity of both countries, and the credible reputation of Philippine schools in producing graduates who assume top professional roles all over the world,” according to the PTIC.

Among the Philipine courses that generated interest during the min-fair were management and finance programs, health-related courses, information technology courses, English as a secondary language courses, engineering, and others, etc.  Vietnamese also were interested in Philippine schools with programs that will help them improve their English verbal communication skills prior to enroling in full-length degree programs in schools where the primary medium for instuction is English.

A bigger Philippine delegation is expected to visit Viet Nam next year to help foster trade in education services and other learning opportunities for both countries.  Philippine-Viet Nam total trade has been growing in recent years and posted more than USD2 billion in transactions in 2008. Bilateral trade between both countries is positioned to surpass that figure anew in 2009.

Picture
The Philippine Trade and Investment Center, the commercial office of the Philippine Embassy in Viet Nam organized a series of business matching sessions and gatherings for Philippine  personal care and cosmetics companies that visited Ho Chi Minh City from 21-27 June 2009.

Seven Philippine companies presented their skin-care, hair-care, oral-care and body-care products to interested Viet Nam-based businesses including top retail channels, spas, beauty shops, import-export companies, and young entrepreneurs.

According to the Philippine delegates, the strong macroeconomic performance of Viet Nam over the past few years have significantly increased the  purchasing power and demand for personal care items of the Vietnamese, around 60% of which are below 35 years old. The Vietnamese are also known to be very attentive to taking care of their physical appearance.

The Philippine cosmetics and personal care sector delegation included top representatives from Pascual Laboratories, Inc; Pervil Cosmetics Philippines; Okala Quality Research and Development Enterprises; Lean Processes, Inc; Aficionado; Rainiers Research and Development Institute; and Angel Sue Marketing.  The business mission was headed by the Department of Trade and Industry’s Bureau of Export Trade Promotion’s Ms. Ester Rosario.

Trade between the Philippines and Viet Nam has been steadily growing in the past years. In 2008, more than USD2 billion worth of trade products were exchanged between both countries, already surpassing the 2010 USD2 billion target set by both countries' governments.

The Philippine delegates also noted that with the slowing down of the economies of traditional markets like the US, Japan and the EU, South East Asian countries should look at one another to explore trade opportunities to ensure the dynamic growth of their local industries.

Interested parties in Viet Nam who wish to get in touch with the Philippine delegates may e-mail: [email protected] or call 84.8.3825.7195.
